Request for PhD Directors: Research on Graduate Ethics Training in Computing

My name is Amber Turner and I am an Information Science PhD student at University of Colorado Boulder working with researchers from PERVADE: Pervasive Data Ethics for Computational Research<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpervade.umd.edu%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cklsapp%40ufl.edu%7Cd03e326d0d30436373f408dd873ab320%7C0d4da0f84a314d76ace60a62331e1b84%7C0%7C0%7C638815408368318296%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2FZDs1TPOXWruKnRXO49AEu%2FjBn7LiQzUC9zS44EsoME%3D&reserved=0> – including Drs. Casey Fiesler, Jessica Vitak, and Michael Zimmer.

We are launching a new research study to understand how PhD students learn about research ethics. We are seeking your help with this study in two ways – our requests include connecting us with Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Engineering PhD students and sharing details about how ethics is addressed in your graduate program. More information about our research group and requests are below:

About PERVADE & Our Research:

PERVADE is a National Science Foundation funded project that is currently focused on developing resources for computing students to help them navigate ethical issues when doing research or building systems that use pervasive data. The present study is focused on learning about the various ways graduate students in computing programs receive training related to research ethics. We realize that there are a number of formal and informal ways students are exposed to research ethics topics and we want to identify a variety of tools and resources that may be most helpful.

Our Requests:

We are hoping you would connect us with Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Engineering PhD students by sending them an email with a survey link on our behalf. I have provided the student email language below for your convenience.

We would also love to hear from you about how and/or where ethics topics are addressed in your program. You can share program details, highlights, or other resources that would aid in our research using this survey link: GRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR SURVEY LINK<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSfJ2afswKebfz-MglKfVLiLxdhwWBZc_J3pD46o7pBi37RG1A%2Fviewform%3Fusp%3Dheader&data=05%7C02%7Cklsapp%40ufl.edu%7Cd03e326d0d30436373f408dd873ab320%7C0d4da0f84a314d76ace60a62331e1b84%7C0%7C0%7C638815408368359625%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=1SdIE7IWvYeHMKj9HW%2FkA3TqOePdpSLDy4dnGabMinI%3D&reserved=0>
