Minimum TOEFL Scores Update for ITAs Plus SPEAK Test, EAP 5836, and Intensive English Reminders Date distributed: March 12, 2026 Distributed to: All Graduate Deans, Associate Deans, School Directors, Department Chairs, Coordinators, and Staff TOEFL Band Scores for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) This January, ETS (Educational Testing Service) stopped reporting sub-scores for the old TOEFL iBT. Now it is only reporting section band scores based on the new TOEFL scores. With the approval of the UF Graduate Council, the University of Florid has adopted these minimum band scores for ITAs with a teaching assignment:     Note: ITAs can continued to demonstrate English language proficiency via IELTS or the UF SPEAK Test. SPEAK Tests April 29, 2026 SPEAK Test: Students who have not yet fulfilled the language requirement for Summer A/B/C Semester 2026 teaching assistantships will need to take the SPEAK Test on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The remaining SPEAK Test dates for Spring 2026 and Summer 2026 are: Wednesday, April 29, 2026 Wednesday, July 15, 2026 Tuesday, July 28, 2026 Thursday, August 6, 2026 The cost of the UF SPEAK Test is $100. Florida law requires the University of Florida to ensure that all teaching faculty, including international teaching assistants (ITAs), are proficient in English.
