Software Developers / Data Analysts:

AI & Network Analysis for Global Food Security 

Garrett Lab, Plant Pathology Department, University of Florida

Fall Semester 2026 | Part-Time (10-20 hrs/week) 

The Role

We are looking for two talented graduate students or advanced undergraduates to join our international research team. In this role, you will build open-source software and data pipelines that have a direct, real-world impact on global food security and biosecurity. 

What You Will Do

  • Develop & Publish: Create new applications and build on existing computational epidemiology tools like the R2M Plant Health Toolbox.
  • Analyze Complex Systems: Conduct network analysis and apply machine learning models to large-scale agricultural datasets.
  • Innovate with AI: Use LLMs to accelerate software development while rigorously validating AI-generated inputs.
  • Collaborate Globally: Work alongside an international team of researchers, contributing to high-level projects that span multiple countries. 

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong proficiency in R programming, with experience in or a willingness to learn other relevant languages (e.g., Python, C++, etc.).
  • Experience with machine learning and advanced statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with using AI coding assistants/LLMs effectively and safely.
  • A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.

The role involves building a web-based 3D viewer and supporting backend systems for managing models, products, and metadata.
