AWM Events on Week of 09/28

On Tuesday, September 29th, AWM and the University Math Society (UMS) will host a LaTeX workshop together at 5:30 P.M. in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) building, room E220. This is a great opportunity to learn how to use LaTeX for classes, research papers, presentations, and more. The workshop is designed to be accessible to people of all experience levels.

On Wednesday, September 30th, we will host our first faculty talk of the year at 4:00 P.M. in Little Hall 225. Dr. Chamila Malagoda Gamage from the Department of Mathematics will give a talk titled "Teaching Calculus with Historical Perspectives". The abstract is attached below.  

Abstract: Calculus is often introduced as a collection of formulas, rules, and procedures, but the ideas behind it have a much richer story. They developed gradually over centuries, across different civilizations, as people tried to solve real mathematical problems and understand change, motion, area, and approximation. 

In this talk, I will share my current research on bringing some of this history into a regular Calculus I classroom. I will discuss why this approach may help address common student questions such as “Why are we learning this?” and “Where did this formula come from?” and show examples of how short historical stories and background are incorporated into everyday lessons. I will also discuss how we use Self-Determination Theory, particularly the ideas of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, to better understand students’ experiences. The goal is to explore whether learning the story behind calculus can help students see the subject as more meaningful, connected, and approachable. 

On Thursday, October 1st , AWM and the University Math Society (UMS) will be hosting Randy Goodman, a professional math-based magician. The event will be held in Turlington Hall L011.  Doors open at 4:00 P.M. and the show will begin at 4:15 P.M. and run for about an hour. Randy will perform incredible magic and mentalism routines before revealing some of the mathematical ideas and secrets behind them.
