EAP 5836 AND SPEAK Tests

Requirements for international teaching assistants (ITAs)

The University of Florida is required by Florida law to ensure all teaching faculty, including International Teaching Assistants (ITAs),  are proficient in English. The three approved tests for oral proficiency are the TOEFL iBT (speaking), the IELTS Academic (speaking), and the SPEAK Test. For more detailed information, click on this link: https://go.ufl.edu/pwnustp

Spring 2025 EAP 5836 (3-credit supervised ITA teaching course):

The supervised ITA teaching course, EAP 5836, is mandatory for all international graduate students who are in their first semester of teaching (with lecturing, discussion leader, or lab responsibilities) and who have not met the English proficiency requirements above. International graduate students appointed as TA-G (grading and office hour responsibilities only) are not required to pass a SPEAK Test and are not eligible to enroll in EAP 5836.

EAP 5836 is offered in the fall and spring semesters. EAP 5836 is not offered in summer. Any international graduate teaching assistant whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency prior to the start of summer classes in order to teach in the summer semester.
